Eben Alexander, MD, and Karen Newell: “Becoming More Whole” (Lecture: 1 hr)

Véronique Bohbot, PhD: “Miracles of Brain Plasticity” (Lecture: 1 hr)
Brain plasticity was thought to be “impossible” in the human adult, less than a decade ago. Yet we present evidence of brain plasticity with benefits far greater than expected, showing improved memory, mood, confidence, self-esteem, mindfulness and happiness. Participants took part in a double blind, placebo controlled, randomized clinical study involving learning spatial relationships between landmarks in the environment. Spatial memory is known to be critically dependent on a part of the brain called the “hippocampus,” and other studies have shown that using the hippocampus is associated with mindfulness practice and is protective of global cognition. Our research shows that stimulating the hippocampus with spatial memory leads to increased grey matter throughout neocortex, which could explain the far reaching unexpected benefits.
